XRDS: Volunteer

We’re seeking student volunteers for XRDS, ACM’s student publication. XRDS is a quarterly print magazine for students by students that examines cutting edge research in computer science (CS), viewpoints on technology’s impact in the world today, and works to support a strong, positive, and inclusive community of students interested in CS. It is not a peer reviewed scholarly publication. Our goal is to make the magazine accessible to anyone with an interest in computer science and technology. We value well written, timely, and interesting work being conducted at different universities, research centers and labs around the word.

Digital Content Editor

Job Description

Interested in social networks and media of the future? XRDS Digital is the home of the quarterly student magazine, where you can find the lastest science and technology news, upcoming conferences and events, scholarship and fellowship deadlines, exclusive content, as well as a blog covering the most interesting topics in computer science. You will be responsible for the XRDS Digital team of student volunteers—editors and bloggers.
 

Eligibility Requirements

We are looking for a organized and responsive computer science student, who is eager to help us shape the way XRDS connects to thousands of like-minded students all around the glob via our webpage, blog and social networks. Eligible applicants must communicate fluently in English, comfortable managing a team, and have prior experience with social media tools like Hootsuite, Buffer, TweetDeck. A working understanding of analytics and SEO is a plus. This volunteer editor position is a two-year commitment. You must be a full-time student.

Hello World; Department Editor

Job Description

Do want to gain experience and improve your writing skills as a columnist with an international magazine? Do you like coding up short examples and prototypes using the latest technologies? ACM XRDS might be the place for you! We are looking for an energetic and talented student to take over our “Hello, World!" column, and publish short tutorials in the quarterly print magazine, along with the relevant source code on our public GitHub account.

Eligibility Requirements

Eligible applicants can write fluently in English, and have prior experience with publishing code on GitHub. Prior experience as a Teaching Assistant or Tutor is a plus. This volunteer editor position is a two-year commitment, with the opprotunity for promotion. You must be a full-time student.

CAREERS; Department Editor

Job Description

Do you like going to resume building workshops, employability study seminars, and club meetings where you can meet guest speakers from the local tech community? Probably not. But do you like hearing talks from "real world" people, learning "what it's like" after graduation, the fun and exciting allure of the real Industry? Do you want to capture the stories of successful computer science professionals and share them with your peers? Then ACM XRDS is for you! We are looking for an out-going and talented student with strong written communication skills to take over our "CAREERS" department. You will be required to reach out regularly to professionals in the Industry, working along side them to craft amazing "I wish I had known" articles to share with current computer science students all around the world. We publish four Career articles in a calendar year.

LABZ; Department Editor

Job Description

Are you interested in researching, connecting with, and writing about the most interesting and dynamic labs around the world conducting research on problems relevant to the themes presented in the magazine issues? ACM XRDS is looking for an energetic and talented student writer to take over our “LABZ" column, and publish short descriptions of academic and industrial research labs in the quarterly print magazine.

Eligible applicants can write fluently in English, are outgoing, assertive, and strong networkers, and are currently enrolled in a graduate degree program. This volunteer editor position is a two-year commitment, with the opprotunity for promotion. You must be a full-time student.

XRDS Web Editor

Job Description

Are you interested in the upkeep of the official ACM XRDS website? Then you should a member of the XRDS digital team. As the Web Editor, you will be in charge of ensuring the website is regularly maintained. In your own unique way, you’ll be complimenting the hard work of all the student volunteers—writers, editors, and bloggers. You will be responsible for making sure the website looks visually appleaing, updating the site with latest XRDS content, and troubleshooting technical issues. You will report to the Digital Content Editor and be expected to liase with ACM staff on a regular basis.

Eligibility Requirements

Eligible applicant must communicate fluently in English, be organized and responsible in completing the work, and adhere diligently to specified deadlines. Responsiveness will be sought among  candidates. The applicant must be versed with handling HTML constructs and  proficient in using Adobe Photoshop. You should also be familiar with Content Management Systems. This volunteer editor position is a two-year commitment. You must be a full-time student
